My study of burlesque, from the Italian burlesco (“joke”) presents an innovative look at a naughty art form enjoying a new heyday.
Fascinated by the rebellious performances within the New York burlesque scene, I captured the artists who take a piece of themselves and build a character in their fantasy world. Focusing on the dichotomy between the incandescence of a public persona and the emotional candor of the private self I wanted my viewer to enter the emotional state of the performers; the character and psyche. I explored the subject matter with a voyeuristic approach, to attempt to reveal a pure moment, to absorb the energy of their act, to capture and translate that energy.
